New Jersey Regulators Approve Curaleaf’s Recreational Marijuana License

Curaleaf continues to sell recreational cannabis in all its location. New jersey state regulators reversed a decision that was made Thursday April 13th,2023 that would have limited the areas that Curaleaf could have sold cannabis in the state.

The Cannabis Regulatory Commission newest vote grants the company renewal of all five annual licensing with some additions included. The Commission came to a vote of four out of Five with no discussion. The meeting lasted seven minutes.

Curaleaf CEO Matt Darin applaud the approval stating It was a “Incredible Victory,”

Curaleaf is in good standing with the CRC and has fulfilled every requirement necessary for the renewal of our licenses. I am incredibly proud of and grateful to every one of the hundreds of dedicated team members who showed up today, not just for their jobs and livelihoods, but for a better, safer cannabis industry in New Jersey,” he said in a statement.

Curaleaf must provide evidence that it is bargaining with union employees in good faith, attest under oath to its activities and tactics, and must provide records regarding plans to modify its New Jersey operations, providing information regards to hiring employees and vendor meeting “certain criteria.”

June 1, 2023 is when the next Scheduled meeting would be taking place. If curaleaf fails to meet these requirements the board can issue penalties, including fines and revocation of those renewed license. Said Dianna Houneou, The Commission Chairman.

Commissioners that voted against the Curaleaf decision stated they were dissatisfied with the companies' clash with workers attempting to unionize and with how transparent Curaleaf has been with the state.

On Monday Commissioner Krista Nash stated that this vote serves as a wake up call for companies that did not understand or appreciate their obligations as it concerns labor relations. Stating “ If the meetings served to remind companies of that obligation, the the CRC has done its job,”

Than she said “ Let me make this very clear- it is time we favor people over profits.” Also stating that New Jersey Legal Cannabis laws specifically lay out the labor provisions for cannabis companies to follow. Also mentioning to maintain a labor peace agreement and bargaining for a contract within 200 days once workers vote to unionize.
